The oldest carnival in Italy
started in Foiano 1539. This carnival takes all the year to prepare for
and the four districts of the town (Bombolo, Azzurri, Rustici and Nottambuli)
compete for the "Carnival's Cup".
The main goal of the competition is to build the most
impressive and creative allegorical cart and the four districts will
shown their work with beautiful floats parade through the town.
The celebrations
run from the last sunday in January to the third sunday in February.
On the day of the last parade, the local King Carnival - called Re Giocondo
(Merry King) - will read out loud his "will" to the crowds,
and after this the giant puppet will be burnt in a rite that has its
roots in some very old peasant traditions.
Photograph shown here are a small documenation of
this festival I took in february 2006. Here you can find also photographs of 2008's edition of the carnival. Otherwise you can still browse the original portfolio here. I am currently reorganizing this portfolio; in the meantime you can check out my portfolio at photo.net.
